what is an "alpha baller"?

This term originates from basketball and is used to identify the best player on the court. Historically, teams with a single “Alpha Baller” (statistically, physically, mentally, judged by peers and the media) won championships. In today’s sports environment, there are usually several “Alpha Ballers” on the same team, which has increased parity in sports and made sports more competitive than ever.

This concept especially applies to today’s business and technology environment. Traditionally a business and/or technology “Alpha Baller” may be called a rainmaker, star, top-performer, winner, or leader. Companies do the best they can to attract and retain these talents, but by definition “Alpha Ballers” have the highest effectiveness at a price many companies can’t afford. There is also the ever-present risk of having your “Alpha Baller” poached by another company, leaving your organization reeling and scrambling to replace lost productivity and revenue.

With the high-risk/high-reward nature of employing “Alpha Ballers” many companies are finding it more effective to contract instead, on an as-needed basis. Askia Howell is an 12 year IT veteran based in Northern California with certifications and experience in networking, servers, storage, security, appliance-based solutions, consulting, and professional services. After graduating from MIT with a degree in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Anthropology, Askia started his career in IT as an Inside Sales Rep, assisting customers by architecting solutions and validating Bill of Materials for upcoming purchases.

With 3.5 years of experience, Askia moved on to Quest Media and Supplies where he was a Technical Consultant, Account Manager, and Product Specialist. This experience established Askia as a top talent in the Sacramento area with customers, partners, and manufacturers. Presented with an opportunity to realize a lifelong dream, Askia left Quest to become the Sacramento/Central Valley Systems Engineer for Brocade Communications.

As in previous experiences, Askia didn’t take long to establish himself as a valuable team player with the ability to consistently deliver for customers. Adjusting to rapid change, Askia became one of the few Systems Engineers at Brocade with deep technical knowledge in IP, Ethernet, Fabric, and Fibre Channel technologies. After achieving his annual quota for 2013 three months early, Askia decided to pursue another lifelong dream and start Alpha Baller Technologies, LLC.
